Your settlement timeline
A practical checklist for your first few months in Canada.
Before you arrive
- Apply for housing early (6–8 weeks ahead)
- Research OHIP/UHIP enrollment rules for your province
- Carry CAD 500 cash for first days
Week 1
- Get a SIM card (Koodo, Fido, or Telstra)
- Open a no-fee newcomer bank account (TD, RBC, Scotiabank)
- Enroll in OHIP (Ontario) or UHIP if at a university
Month 1
- Get your SIN card at Service Canada (free, bring study permit)
- Apply for a student credit card to start building Equifax/TransUnion score
- Set up Presto, Compass, or your city's transit card
Month 3+
- Begin PGWP planning with your school's international office
- Explore CRS score and Express Entry options
- File your first CRA tax return if you had income
