Open Australian bank account

Week 1

Visit Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac, or NAB with your passport and student visa grant letter. Look for student accounts with no monthly fees.

Get TFN (Tax File Number)

Essential

Apply online at ato.gov.au or via the ATO app. Processing is same-day to next business day. Your TFN is the first step to Australian financial identity.

Set up a phone plan on contract

Often Missed

Most major Australian phone providers (Telstra, Vodafone, Optus) offer 24-month contracts. The on-contract plan (not prepaid) reports to credit bureaus and builds credit history.

Register with Equifax

Optional

Visit equifax.com.au to register and set up your credit file. You can access free credit scores and reports. This is where Australian lenders check your credit.

๐ŸŒ Australia vs India: Credit Score Differences

Scale
India (CIBIL): 300โ€“900
Australia (Equifax): 0โ€“1,200 (similar concept, different scale)
History
India: Based on credit products (loans, cards)
Australia: Also includes bills (phone, utilities, rent) and repayment history
Positive Data
India: Limited positive data collection until recently
Australia: Comprehensive credit reporting (CCR) since 2018 โ€” positive payment history is now recorded
Fresh Start
India: Your score comes with you
Australia: Credit file starts empty for international students โ€” this is good! No negative history from India affects you.

โŒ Common Australian Credit Myths (Busted)

โœ—

Checking my own credit report hurts my score

No. Checking your own report (soft inquiry) has zero impact. Hard inquiries from lenders when you apply for credit have a small, temporary impact (~5 points).

โœ—

I should carry a small balance to build credit

False. Carrying a balance (paying interest) is costly and doesn't help. Paying in full every month is ideal behaviour and is best for credit building.

โœ—

My Indian credit score transfers to Australia

No. Australian credit bureaus don't share data across borders. Your Equifax Australia file starts empty when you arrive. Exception: Some fintech companies offer credit import services for Indians.

โœ—

I need multiple credit cards to build credit

One card paid responsibly is enough. Multiple cards increase risk of overspending and missed payments. Start with one card and keep it disciplined.

โœ—

Debit cards build credit

Debit is not credit. Debit cards are not reported to credit bureaus and don't build your score. Only credit products (credit cards, loans) count.
