- • Books and training materials

🌏 India–Australia Tax Treaty
Australia has a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with India. This treaty prevents you from being taxed twice on the same income in both countries.
Key points:
- • Income earned in Australia is taxed in Australia
- • Indian tax authorities recognise tax paid in Australia
- • When you return to India, you may need to declare Australian income
- • Consult an accountant familiar with India–Australia tax for details
📱 How to File Your Tax Return
1.
Get your TFN: Apply immediately upon arrival at ato.gov.au
2.
Set up myTax: Create an ATO online account on the ATO website or use the ATO app
3.
File after 1 July: Tax year ends 30 June. File your return from 1 July to 31 October (or later if you need more time)
4.
Expected refund: Most student workers get a refund of AUD 300–1,200 per year. Refunds appear in your bank account within 2–4 weeks.
Pro tip: You can file your tax return yourself using myTax (free) or use a tax agent. For student workers with simple tax situations, myTax is usually enough.
💸 Claiming Superannuation (DASP) on Departure
When you leave Australia, you can claim all your superannuation contributions through the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) scheme.
DASP process:
- • Average claim: AUD 8,000–15,000 for a student working part-time
- • Taxed at 37% (Australian tax) + 10% (Indian tax withheld)
- • Apply after you leave Australia and your visa is cancelled
- • Processing: 6–8 weeks
- • The super fund transfers money directly to your Indian bank account
