How I Got My SSN as an F-1 Student (Step-by-Step)
Just got my SSN approved — here's exactly what worked. Step 1: Wait until you're within 30 days of your program start date (SSA won't process before then). Step 2: Get your university ID and enrollment letter. Step 3: Visit your local SSA office with: Passport, F-1 visa, I-20, university enrollment letter, and any employment authorization if applicable. Step 4: The SSA will mail your card within 2–4 weeks. Important: You do NOT need an ITIN first — that's a common misconception. ITIN is only for people who are NOT eligible for an SSN. As an F-1 student with work authorization, apply directly for SSN at the SSA.
Can I open a bank account before getting my SSN?
I'm arriving in 2 weeks and want to prepare. Does anyone know banks that work with ITIN?
